Job Description
CLS is looking for an experienced GIS Technician local to La Porte, TX. The GIS Technician will maintain Geographic Information System (GIS) data layers for projects in the oil, gas, electric transmission, and private sector fields. Create and maintain maps for public viewing at open houses, for company use, and for client use. Perform quality control on GIS work, as well as analyze and review GIS needs and requirements. Collect, transfer and plot coordinates using data from clients, counties, field notes, and engineering plans. Read and perform COGO calculations from plats and legal descriptions. Respond to inquiries and provide information to all departments. Coordinate with field personnel and/or landowners to identify rights-of-way. Read and understand survey drawings, design plans, maps, and translate data into usable formats. Digitize parcels from multiple sources. Provide support to address issues that arise from exploration, land ownership and title, asset management, etc. Assist project managers in fulfillment of team goals and project tracking, as well as provide technical assistance to non-GIS staff. Perform general office duties as assigned.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Maintain, organize and update various Geographic Information System data layers for projects in the oil, gas, electric transmission, and private sector fields.
- Create and maintain electronic and paper maps for public viewing at open houses, for internal company use, and for client use.
- Performing quality control on own and peers work.
- Analyze and review GIS needs and requirements.
- Collect, transfer and plot coordinates using data from clients, county data, field notes and engineering plans.
- Read and perform COGO calculations on subdivision and rural plats, as well as legal/metes and bounds descriptions.
- Respond to inquiries and provide information to all departments.
- Coordinate with field personnel and/or landowners to identify rights-of-way, often in response to landowner inquiries.
- Read and understand survey drawings, design plans, maps, and translate data into usable formats.
- Digitizing parcels from various sources including data obtained from client, counties, field collection, etc.
- Provide technical and analytical support to address issues including but not limited to exploration, land ownership and title, and asset management.
- Assist project managers in fulfillment of team goals and project tracking.
- Provide technical assistance to non-GIS staff.
- Perform general office duties as assigned.
Accountability:
- This position is responsible for various GIS Duties, and other duties as assigned.
Qualification Requirements (minimum and preferred requirements): To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
- Must have 1-3+ years of GIS experience.
- Must be local to La Porte, TX.
- Must be okay with a hybrid schedule.
- Must have experience with GIS data entry of the intrastate and interstate pipeline assets utilizing various tools.
- Prior knowledge of pipeline and survey stationing is a plus!
Education:
- Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with coursework in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), geography or other related field(s) preferred.
Experience:
- One or more years of progressively responsible related experience in maintaining GIS Datasets, or any equivalent combination of education, experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Language Skills:
- Requires excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills.
- Must be able to write clearly and concisely to prepare reports, specifications and correspondence.
Mathematical Skills:
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, percentages and decimals.
Reasoning Ability:
- Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
- Ability to deal with problems involving several variables in standardized situations.

- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus in use of computer monitor and other manual, task-related functions.
- The employee may be required to travel by car, plane, taxi, bus, and shuttle; to and from various projects nationwide, and to handle their own luggage and computer equipment.
Work Environment:
- This job will require a majority of work to be performed in a well-lighted, temperature controlled, fast-paced office setting. Some activities may require overnight travel to field locations and client offices. There are frequent interruptions during the workday for impromptu meetings with various corporate employees, client calls and required weekly and other meetings.
